Arrellin concentrates on Cervantes Before settling scores

When Randy Arrellin turned professional in January of 2009, it seemed like everything was going a thousand miles a minute. Randy just felt different once he stepped in the ring; “not all there” as he says.

"I felt good after the weigh-ins but once it got closer to the fight I just froze," says Arrellin in reference to his 1st round TKO loss to Raymond Montes. "It was different compared to the amateurs, but I think I learned from it and have improved each time out."

"The Savage" (4-3 3ko's), as he is known in the boxing ranks in New Mexico, bounced back from his loss to Montes winning his next 4 out of 5 bouts. He picked up a big win over local featherweight Willie Villanueva in May before falling to Lonnie Smith two weeks later; a bout in which Arrellin feels he shouldn't have taken-but learned from.

"I got a call from my trainer (Bernie Sanchez) and he asked me if I wanted to fight Smith.” “I hadn't been training for a week, but I said sure," states Arrellin. "I didn't think the week off would hurt me but I ran out of gas and got stopped."

The experience taught Arrellin the importance of always being in the gym and be ready if a fight comes up. "I won't ever do that again; I will only take a fight if I have been in the gym and ready to go."

Arrellin is now gearing up for Luis Cervantes, (he sports a 7-5-3 record) who should provide a test for the 19-year old Arrellin. Cervantes has fought in New Mexico in the past, falling to Matthew Esquibel.

"I haven't seen Cervantes fight but Bernie thinks I should do really well against him and I hope this will propel me to more fights."

One fight Arrellin wants is a rematch with Montes but according to Arrellin, Montes doesn't want to meet at 126, up from 122.

"I asked him several times if we could do it again, but Montes keeps saying he won't fight me at a higher weight, I can't make 122 anymore and I fight at 130, but I'm willing to meet at 126."

If the Montes fight falls through, it looks like Villanueva wants another crack at Arrellin.

"Sure I'd fight Willie again if he wants a rematch but first I have to get past Cervantes then we can settle scores with each other."
