EDGAR ZUBIA
Meet Edgar Zubia, 1-0-1. With approximately 90 amateur fights,
Zubia has had a memorable amateur record. He won one Jr. Golden
Glove State Championship, one Silver Gloves State Championship,
seven New Mexico Golden Gloves Open Class State Championships,
and five Regional Golden Gloves Championships. He was born and
raised in Hobbs, and trains at the School of Hard Knocks in
Hobbs, NM. Zubia has been boxing since the age of 13. He aspired
to be a boxer at a young age and says, “ I would find myself
like most young kids watching movies (Blood Sport, Rocky ,
Kickboxer) and having that itch to hit the nearest pillow and
placing myself in their position and telling myself one day I
WILL BE LIKE THEM!!” Well-known and respected by the boxing
community, Zubia’s trainer is Isidro Castillo. Zubia has been
training with Coach Castillo for 9 years. Zubia says his coach
is a no-nonsense, stand-up type of person who is there for you -
no matter what. Zubia says they have great relationship in and
out the ring, and Castillo has helped mold him into the person
he is today.
Edgar Zubia is loving parent of two beautiful children is in a
relationship with his girlfriend. Zubia works for Windstream
Communication where he has been employed for 5 years. Zubia
became a teenage father at the young age of 14. He says,
“Through boxing and good parenting I was able to overcome my
early obstacles - to reach one of my dreams; with hard work and
dedication anything’s within your grasp.”
When asked which boxers he admires, Zubia said “Eric Morales,
Jorge Arce and Sugar Ray Leonard. Morales for the way he fights
back when he gets hurt, Arce for the way he carries himself with
the media, and Leonard amazing speed and footwork”. Zubia says
his biggest fan is his mother, who admits she didn’t want him to
box however, when he started devoting his time to the sport, she
devoted herself to cheering him on.
Is Zubia ready for his fight against Antonio Martinez from
Espanola, NM on the undercard of World Dominance on December
2nd. Both Zubia and Martinez fought John Herrera from Roswell,
in very close fights. Zubia says his training has definitely
been more intense and he is training harder than ever. He’s
looking forward to seeing his hard work pay off. Zubia says this
fight is important to him because it will give him a chance to
showcase his talent for the boxing fans in Albuquerque.
