Gomez Calls Out Other
Welterweights
(JUN 11) “It’s important to prove yourself the best at home
before moving up. To be the best, you have to beat the best”
said Joe Gomez (10-1-1 4KO’s) of Bloomfield, NM who escaladed
with the TKO win.
This past Saturday at Sky Ute Casino in Ignacio, CO, local
favorite Joe Gomez took on veteran Rene Francisco Herrera
(26-17-0 19KO’s) of El Paso, TX. It was a scheduled
eight-rounder at 152 lbs, but only went four rounds. Herrera
threw in the towel between the fourth and fifth bell claiming
that blood from a cut on his right eyebrow was preventing him
from going on.
Herrera tossing in the towel surprised the crowd. The first
round went to Gomez who had an effective jab; the second went to
Gomez when a straight right turned the tables for him. Gomez
dominated the third round keeping Herrera at arms length. The
heat was on in the fourth when Herrera kept Gomez in the ropes
with straight lefts and right hooks.
After the fight Gomez said, “It was good experience for me.
Fighting guys with this kind of experience is what I need.” He
said he’d like to clean up the welterweight division at home,
which he says would mean fighting Joaquin Zamora, Hector Munoz
and Ray Sanchez III.
